More Random Thoughts
I have been a bit all over the place really. The whole New Year/Birthday 'get-a-life' resolutions having lead to even more procrastination and fragmented effort than ever (if that is actually possible).
Been reading more about the reformation including some wonderfully biased things on heresy in the Catholic Encyclopedia most of which seems to have been written in 1909-1910 when the world was not terribly PC. Don't get me wrong, am not advocating religious intolerance and I'm pretty PC myself, but some times it seems to be about obfuscation as much as inclusivity. I mean I was reading an article in a social policy journal on the housing needs of mental health patients, you know the ones we send out into community "care" with a hug and a hope that they stay on their medication, that referred to them through out as 'consumers/tangata whai something-I-can't-quite-remember'. Consumers of mental health services or 'people in search of well-being'. The Maori bit is fine, a nice positive spin on the issue really, but consumers? Apparently being nuts is now just another (valid) lifestyle choice. Oh I get that there is a reason, a background, a whole debate thing. I have read Foucault. But, still...
Sometimes trying to be tolerant and non judgemental and fair-minded seems way too much like hard work. Especially when the world is going to hell and everyone else seems to have no problem seeing things in black and white and calling each other names. I have had to stop watching, listening to and reading the news really. I just scan the headlines at Newsroom to keep up, well except for the parts of the print media that I get paid to read. Theology and historical wrangles over it have come to seem like light relief.
